Robotlegs & Signals: A Match Made in Heaven (19:00 – 20:00) – Conrad Winchester
Robotlegs is an Actionscript framework that makes it easier to write and maintain applications. It can use almost any design pattern for the application’s architecture but comes with a built in version of the Model, View, Controller and Service design pattern. This is called its MVCS reference implementation.

This talk will explore developing a small but real-world application using the Robotlegs Framework along with this MVCS implementation. We’ll look at how the architecture of the application can easily be split into separate layers that all have clear areas of concern.

The talk will also demonstrate how well Robotlegs integrates with AS3 Signals to produce what I believe is one of the cleanest application frameworks available to Actionscript developers at the moment.

Arduino & ActionScript (20:15 – 21:15) – George Profenza
This talk will be a quick intro into Arduino, sensors, actuators and communication with Flash. I will present the different options for creating visuals using data from Arduino and the pros and cons of working using Flash for this sort of projects. Hopefully, if the hardware won’t fail, we’ll have some nice demos.

Re-Architecting the Designer-Developer Workflow (19:00 – 20:00) – Richard Lord
Most application development follows a pattern where the designers design it then the developers build it. Any change in the design requires more work from the developers, who have to implement each change request.

It doesn’t have to be this way. By modifying the application architecture, we can enable the developer to do their work before the designer, leaving the designer free to alter the design as frequently as they wish without recourse to developer time.

This frees designers to respond to client requests in a timely manner and frees developers to work on a more strategic level, adding functionality to the tools the designers use without being bogged down in day-to-day client projects.

In this session I’ll describe this new architecture, how and why I developed it, the benefits and pitfalls of its use, and how to implement it using any of the current dependency injection frameworks

Managing a Monster Flash Project (20:15 – 21:15) – Cat Burton & Martyn Jones

Digital Storytelling – Creative Technology in the Newsroom and Beyond (19:00 – 20:00) – Alastair Dant
A tour of interactive authoring at the Guardian. Topics include storyfinding, cross-department workflows, rapid development, data visualisation and open APIs. We’ll take a peek behind the scenes of several apps such as live results for the election, the world cup in words and something to ponder for Stevie Jobs.

Flash Contracting (20:15 – 21:15) – David Fox
Becoming a contract developer in London can be a pretty stressful decision. Setting up limited companies, finding jobs, getting paid and generally fitting in are just a few things you need to master before you can even begin to deal with crazy deadlines, difficult clients, switching workspaces every other week and the occasional piece of badly written code.

This session will show the pro’s and con’s of contract life for those considering stepping over to the dark side and for those who have already taken the plunge, we’ll be going through ways in which you can make the market work for you, dealing with recruiters, how to minimize the pain of contracting’s disadvantages and also a few tips on how to push your day rate up.

Developing Flash Apps to Run 24/7 (19:00 – 20:00) – Matt Pollitt & Juan Delgado
Tips and tricks to develop Flash/AIR applications that are meant to run 24/7, most of the times unattended and facing the public. Fail and recover gracefully, error logging, automated updates, avoid memory leaks, remote access, crash forensics…

This session will involve AS3, AIR 2 (including the new NativeProcess API and monitor the file system for changes), building little “helper” utilities in haXe + Neko, setting up cron jobs (with SSH!) and let the world know via Twitter.

An Introduction to Android (20:15 – 21:15) – Richard Leggett
This session will go through the basics of setting up your environment ready for Android development, building a very simple Hello World application to illustrate how you build interactive user interfaces. It will also cover what types of resource are used in Android apps, how to draw graphics using a variety of techniques, and how to skin and theme components.

We’ll also cover the subject of screen resolutions and the hugely important screen density problem that will be important to all mobile developers as new devices come out with different size screens, so that your app can scale from phone to tablet without any modification at all. Animation and timing will be explored, those familiar with Tweens in Flash should find themselves at home here. We’ll then move onto the sometimes prickly subject of Threads and Handlers, two very important concepts for keeping your application and games responsive. Finally a look at a couple of game engines that make use of OpenGL ES for blazing performance, and some tips throughout.

Introducing the Open Source Media Framework (19:00 – 20:00) – Jodie O’Rourke
The idea behind OSMF is to reduce the complexity involved in developing media players (particularly video players), and in doing so, lower the barriers-to-entry to allow many more developers to create unique and engaging players. OSMF aggregates fixes for many of the problems that other developers have toiled over, meaning you can build rapidly, safe in knowledge that your output will be stable. As a business, the standardisation of player development means that new developers should be able to join your team with relative ease, and become productive in less time.

Jodie will introduce the main features of the latest OSMF build and demonstrate some examples with code.

The MooTools JavaScript Framework (20:15 – 21:15) – Alex Rogers
As interactive demands increase on the web and older web browsers still linger and continue to require support by many clients, frameworks are developed to make this possible and provide cross-browser compatibility. For developers, the framework that stands higher than the rest, is the MooTools JavaScript framework through its modular approach, Fx API, handling of AJAX request and many more reasons.

In this presentation, Alex demonstrates the power of MooTools and how he has recently used it to build a recycling message board app called dealfree.net using progressive enhancement with PHP and MySQL, to add some spice to a bespoke CMS and newsletter application, and on his own website.

From Flash to Unity (and back) (19:00 – 20:00) – Bartek Drozdz
Unity is a new technology that is taking the web and mobile by storm. Along with Flash engines such as Papervision and Away3D it announces a shift in general web designing, where 3D is used not only for games but for any kind of applications: social, advertisement, education, you name it.

We, as the Flash community, are on the frontline of those who are supposed to bring 3D content to the wide web. But around 3D graphics there already exists a huge industry with years of accumlated experience and hunders of tools. Scary? We will try to see how to get into the 3D flow without feeling lost.

During the presentation, we will make a walk through the Unity authoring tool and compare it with Flash IDE. Next we will get an introduction on how to work with 3D assets. Finally we’ll focus on scripting and briefly compare C# with Actionscript 3.

Last but not least, we will explore the topic on how learning Unity can inspire you to make better Flash applications… and how to use your Flash experience to make better use of Unity in your work. You will leave the presentation with a solid dose of 3D love that that you can directly apply to your next project!

The Many Faces of Away3D (20:15 – 21:15) – Rob Bateman
Since its inception, the explosion of 3D Flash content around the world has still not fully subsided. Yet we are already seeing the beginnings of a secondary stage of evolution and innovation. Demand for 3D graphics in the browser is as high as ever, and with the help of its ubiquity, Flash is still the most compatible 3D plugin existing on the web today.

In this session, Rob explores some of the potential new features now becoming available for creating high quality 3D Flash experiences in the browser, with help from the 3D friendly Flash 10 Player and some of the latest Away3D releases and related technologies available from the open source community.

Efficient Programming Practices (19:00 – 20:00) – Mathieu Gosselin
In an ideal world without any deadlines, hot-blooded project managers and no picky stubborn designers we would all follow best practices and write clean re-useable code. Unfortunately we don’t live in an ideal world and as developers we often have the constraints of having limited time while we still need to provide a decent outcome.

This presentation will focus on techniques to improve both the speed and the quality (which we can summarize as efficiency) of our programming so you can have a life and more time with your friends, family, or with your Xbox, and still keep the client happy.
It will look at the balance between creating re-usable code, opposed to writing in a time limited environment focusing on the delivery of the the work, and how to adapt our coding to suit the project we are dealing with.

Flex 4 (20:15 – 21:15) – Tink
In this session we’ll take a look at the what’s new in Flex 4.

We’ll also take a look at how to build your own classes on top of the spark framework, including skins, layouts, containers and effects, with some practical examples of some code I’ve been working on.

Flash 3D Workflow (19:00 – 20:00) – Dennis Ippel
3D in Flash requires massive amounts of performance tuning in order to get a decent interactive experience. There are many different areas where optimisation can take place.

In his presentation Dennis will focus on optimising the loading of external 3D models. He will go through a complete workflow that starts with the creation of a 3D object in Blender and ends with the same 3D object displaying in the Flash Player. By going through this workflow he will show tools that help optimise the process and he will explore the different possibilities that 3D engines have to offer.

SEO and Flash (20:15 – 21:15) – Adam Chappell
SEO is an important tool in your website building arsenal, yet many developers are unsure how to optimise their Flash based sites.

In this session Adam Chappell will discuss some of the techniques for re-organising Flash sites for SEO as well as some of the potential pitfalls and considerations involved.
